OATH Authentication G-Suite

Starting February 15, 2021, G Suite accounts will only allow access to apps using OAuth. Password-based access will no longer be supported.

Google will be turning off username and password access for LSA’s (less secure apps e.g. Microsoft Outlook) with out using more security steps.

Only apps that use OATH authentication will be able to access the G-Suite account.

This will be done in two stages:

  1. June 15, 2020. Uses who try to connect the G-Suite account to LSA (less secure app) for the first time will no longer be able to. Users who have connected LSA’s prior to this will still be able to.

  2. February 15, 2021 - Access to all LSA’s will be turned off for all G-Suite accounts.

If you added a Google account to a less secure app using username and password for authentication, you will need to re-add the account this time as a Google account with will authenticate using OATH.

After February 21 2021, you wil start to receive an error message saying the username password is incorrect. The user will then need to re-add the account and allow Google Access to the LSA (e.g. Outlook)

Users using Outlook for their Google account will have to ensure they are using Outlook 2019 at least, or any up-to-date O365 Outlook.

If you are using the Mail app on iOS or MacOS or Outlook for MAC, and only use a password to login, you will need to re-add the account. When you add it back, select the “sign in with Google” to automatically use OATH.
